David Guzik commentary on 2 Samuel 18 describes the defeat of Absalom, who is killed by Joab in spite of Davids order not to harm his son.
David mourned so much for Absalom because he was genuinely his son. He saw his own sins, his weaknesses, and his rebellion exaggerated in Absalom's life.
This chapter puts a period to Absalom's rebellion and life, and so makes way for David to his throne again, whither the next chapter brings him back in.
David's grief was not merely that of a father for his first-born son, but for that son slain in the very act of outrageous sin.
