Unlike antlers that are shed annually, tusks evolved from upper incisor teeth and continually grow over the course of the animal's lifetime. As the tusks grow, layers of ivory are added over time, growing over the previous outer layer. The head end of an elephant's tusk is hollow but becomes more solid towards the tip.
