Yes it can happen. Like you say they'll be 'duds' (infertile) but females can lay them without the presence of the male.

Female geckos are able to lay eggs without a male, but the eggs produced are unfertilised. Therefore, they cannot produce babies on their own.
Let me start out by saying that it's uncommon for this to happen! I've only had two females lay infertile eggs without ever being paired with a male.
