Standard upgrades improve the weapon's base damage as well as the scaling it receives from Strength and/or Dexterity, unlike Raw Upgrades.

To get a regular upgrade from +5 or +6 (or change any weapon's properties, really), it has to be done through a Modify option at the correct Blacksmith.
