He did everything to honor God with his being. His prayer life was his place of coming to rest in someone bigger than himself.

This was how David strengthened himself in the Lord his God, and was able to face and overcome his problems with the help the Lord gave him.

Encouraging himself means David rebuilt strength, courage, motivation, and possibly his will to will and trust in God.

"But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God," i.e., sought consolation and strength in prayer and believing confidence in the Lord (1 Samuel 30:7.).
