The "house of mourning" represents the place where one encounters suffering, sorrow, and hardship. It is a symbol of the trials and tribulations of life.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

In Ecclesiastes, Solomon is clearly implying that, because we love to laugh, worldly mirth is attractive on the surface and momentarily focuses our attention.
