Exterior walls play an important role in the stability of a building and its protection from external influences. The minimum thickness of exterior walls can vary from 38 cm to 51 cm or more , depending on the materials used and the extent of thermal insulation.

A solid brick wall is usually about 22 cm thick, a cavity wall between 27 cm and 30 cm thick, and a solid stone wall could be as much as 50 cm.
However, in order to provide better thermal insulation, they are usually built thicker anyway. The wall thicknesses are then approximately between 36 and 50 cm.
Table 1 describes dwelling walls analysed with pertinent boundary conditions, and Table 2 shows values of stationary regime characteristics.
