Periodical cicadas are about 1-1 ½ inches long, have reddish colored eyes, black bodies and complete a life cycle in either 13 or 17 years.

Adult cicadas have short lives, usually only a few weeks. Most of their lives are spent as nymphs underground.

When it emerges from the ground, it lives only four to six more weeks—just long enough to mate, fertilize or lay eggs, and start the cycle all over again.
