In the Formatting Pane>Specifi column>Values>Value decimal places, enter 0 decimal places instead of "Auto" and that will display the thousand separator.

The measures that I was using has a "General" format. Changing to "Decimal Value" and adding comma separator did the trick. View solution in original post.

I prefer using recommended DAX separators but it has its disadvantages such as a comma as a thousand separator. See measure below to solve this issue.
