Lugano is a very nice city, and a lakeside location makes a nice relaxing stay. I'd say that if the travel time doesn't bother you, go for it.

Lugano is much nicer and there is a lot more to do. No need to stay in Lausanne even if you skip Lugano. Make sure to visit Morcote if you go to Lugano.
