Verse 17 is a peaceful footnote to John 3:16. Jesus' earthly ministry, His "first coming" to earth, was for the purpose of saving people, not condemning them.
"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned."
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
