How do you decide where to go and stay in the Como-Lugano region? Are the any smaller towns besides Como and Lugano that would be a good choice.

Lake Maggiore is easier to reach and IMO a better lake - or slightly better for the average tourist. This is due to the Borromean Islands just off Stresa.
