Live Oak, centrally situtated in the county, was founded in 1863 by the Pensecola and Georgia Railroad. The land originally comprised a Section, or 640 acres.

It was established by John Branch who arrived in Florida in 1832 and served as Florida Territorial Governor while living at Live Oak for 15 years.
