Jesus notes how easy it is to say the words, "your sins are forgiven." Such a thing is spiritual, and there's no tangible evidence that would disprove it.

Which they thought was most easy for man, or more proper and peculiar to God to say, thy sins be forgiven thee, or to say, rise up and walk?

Our Lord meant, by putting this question, and acting upon it, to prove himself to be God, and to remove the imputation of blasphemy from him.

Jesus calls out their blasphemous unbelief and demonstrates that He is Who He claims to be by healing the paralytic, telling him to get up and go home.
