It turns out the problem is that M1 is incorrectly using YPbPR mode instead of RGB mode, making the monitors text blurred and colours off.

I can only 'upscale' to higher resolutions on my 4K external monitor. I can choose the higher resolutions (eg 2560 x 1440) but it looks fuzzy, not sharp.
