peptidoglycan function - Axtarish в Google
Peptidoglycan (less commonly referred to as 'murein') forms a mesh-like layer outside the cytoplasmic membrane, is responsible for rigidity and shape of bacterial cells and protects them from osmotic disruption .
Peptidoglycan serves a structural role in the bacterial cell wall, giving structural strength, as well as counteracting the osmotic pressure of the cytoplasm.
Peptidoglycans also function as antagonists of Poly(I:C). Peptidoglycans may be used to estimate the activity of lysing enzymes such as lyticase.
