To bless the Lord means to express our love for Him with a grateful heart that is rooted in a humble reverence that only desires that He is glorified.

David began the psalm by telling his own soul to bless the Lord, but he knew the praise and honor to God should go beyond what he could give.

It points to a soulful communion with God, a recognition of His sovereignty, and a desire to express adoration and thanksgiving from the depths of the heart.

It is an emphatic calling upon his soul, that is, himself, never to forget the many favors which God was continually conferring upon him.
