The Greek word for shield is “ Ασπίδα ” (a-speed-ah). It comes from the ancient Greek Ασπίς (a-spees) that means both shield and a kind of poison snake. It is possible that the name is taken from the shape of these both items. The shield used in ancient Greece propably looked alike the head of the aforementioned snake.
