Sylheti belongs to the Eastern Indo-Aryan languages, that evolved from Magadhi Prakrit . The lowlands around Sylhet were originally inhabited by ancient Khasi people (Austroasiatic); and the earliest known Indo-Aryan settlements were made in the 6th century under Kamarupa king.
