Hester has heard that certain influential citizens feel Pearl should be taken from her. Alarmed, Hester sets out with Pearl for Governor Bellingham's mansion.

Rumors surface that the authorities are planning to take Pearl from Hester because they fear that Pearl is possessed and dangerous to Hester.

Two or three years have passed. One day Hester and Pearl walk into Governor Bellingham's hall. Hester brings a pair of gloves she has sewn and embroidered.
