History of Tonga. Tonga was first inhabited about 3,000 years ago by Austronesian-speaking people of the Lapita culture , best known from their elaborately decorated pottery. From at least the 10th century ce Tonga was ruled by a line of sacred kings and queens, the Tu'i Tonga.
