A femoral hernia may be either reducible or irreducible , and each type can also present as obstructed and/or strangulated. A reducible femoral hernia occurs when a femoral hernia can be pushed back into the abdominal cavity, either spontaneously or with manipulation.
Strangulated Hernias. A strangulated femoral hernia occurs when the hernia blocks blood supply to part of the bowel - the loop of bowel loses its blood supply.
Unlike inguinal hernias, femoral hernias are far more common in women, particularly older women. This is because of the wider shape of the female pelvis.
