Thus ΔX means “ the amount of change in the value of the variable X, when comparing one state to another ”. Example: suppose that X is a measure of distance. If its first value, X₁, is 3 meters and its second value, X₂, is 17 meters, then ΔX = X₂ - X₁ = (17 m) - (3 m) = 14 m. The amount of change of distance was 14 m.
